[OCR NON CONTRÔLE] N2 - Examination of the GLOMAR CHALLENGER cores in the Mediterranean Sea (Leg 13) enables us to distinguish three main lithological units in the Neogene series. The lower unit is composed of blue marls with a poor, or dwarfed, fauna. The marls are of Langhian, Serravalian and Tortonian age, and are very similar to the blue marls of the same age known on land (in the Rhône basin, Vienna Basin, the Panonic Basins, etc.). This suggests that the Vindobonian Tethys received a uniform type of sedimentation.
