Abstract The landing ban of Raja undulata has raised misunderstanding for French fishermen’s, particularly for those fishing in the normano‐breton gulf where this species is abundant (Southeast of ICES Division VIIe) with an extension to the North Coast of the Cotentin (in ICES Division VIId). In this context, the RAIMOUEST project has been established as a professional and scientist partnership in order to improve fisheries data on the main ray species caught in the normano‐breton gulf (Raja undulata, Raja brachyura, Raja microocellata, Raja clavata and Raja montagui). The objectives were the identification of fisheries for rays, production of stocks status indicators (catch, landings, Catch Per Unit Effort indices, length distribution, abundance indices of adults and recruits) and the geo‐localization of potential areas for spatial protection measures. The aim of RAIMOUEST project is thus to re‐evaluate the perception of the state of these stocks, and subsequently, to propose appropriate and concerted management measures for sustainable exploitation of these resources. Furthermore RAIMOUEST contributes to the RECOAM project carried out by APECS in Atlantic and English Channel coastal waters on the main ray species (Stéphan et al., 2013). The present working document summarizes the already collected information and presents the first results on ray fisheries characterization, as well as, on stock status indicators.
