Les campagnes COPANO ont été réalisées au cours de l'été 1979 à bord du «Suroit» (CNEXO) dans le cadre d'un projet international I.C.I.M.E. Ce projet se proposait d'étudier complètement de petites zones de quelques km2 pour déterminer les relations entre les caractéristiques des nodules et les différents paramètres de leur environnement. En deux campagnes, cinq sites ont été étudiés, deux dans le Pacifique nord, deux dans le Pacifique sud et un dans le Pacifique équatorial. Ces sites sont situés sur le méridien 134° W et permettent de tester la symétrie des «champs de nodules» par rapport à la zone à haute productivité biogène équatorial. Sur chaque site les prélèvements de nodules ont été replacés dans leur cadre morphologique et structural. Des prélèvements de sédiments et des traits photographiques ont permis d'établir la relation nodules et sol marin. Il a été ainsi possible pour chaque site d'établir un essai de cartographie de la «pédologie sous-marine».L'analyse géochimique montre une corrélation inverse des teneurs en métaux: Mn, Cu, Ni dans les sédiments et tes nodules associés. Les teneurs en métaux augmentent dans les sédiments en s'éloignant de l'équateur alors que dans les nodules elles diminuent. Le rôle de la productivité organique suivie de dissolution et de diagenèse est vraisemblablement le phénomène dominant pour l'enrichissement des nodules en métaux de transition. Les propriétés physiques des nodules: densité sur lefond, taille et faciès semblent être en relation avec la circulation profonde. Les zones les plus favorables pour trouver des nodules nombreux et riches sont les flancs de vallées sous-marines profondes. |

The cruises named COPANO have been undertaken during the summer 1979 on the R. V. Le Suroit of the CNEXO, as a part of an international research program I.C.I.M.E. The objective of this project was to study relatively small zones (a few km2) and to establish a relationship between characteristics of the manganese nodules and their environment. During the COPANO cruises, five zones have been studied: two in the northern Pacific, two in the southern Pacific and finally one in the equatorial Pacific. All the zones are centered on the longitude 134° Wand therefore their symmetry to the highly productive equatorial zone may be tested. As one of the results of the cruises is the relation between nodules and the bottom soil, established by sediment-sampling and a large number of photographic pictures of the sea bottom. In this way for each zone a schematic «geological» or rather «pedological» map could be drawn.Geochemical analysis demonstrate an inverted symmetry between the metal content of the sediments (Mn, Cu, Ni) and the associated nodules. The metal content of the sediments increases with the distance from the Equator whereas in the nodules the metal content diminishes. The organic production followed by dissolution and diagenesis is most likely the dominant phenomenon governing the enrichment of the nodules. The physical properties of the nodules : their density of the bottom, their size and appearance seems to be related to the deep water circulation. The most favourable zones for nodule exploration are the flanks of the deep submarine valleys. |
