The indigenous rock oyster (Saccostrea glomerata ) was the first target for aquaculture in the 1930's although it was not intensively cultured until the 1960's. The faster growing Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas ) appeared in 1969/70 and now comprises virtually all the farmed oysters in New Zealand.
