AB A hematological study of erythrocytic constants of a teleost fish, the European hake Merluccius merluccius has been undertaken to evaluate the effect of infestation by the branchial parasitic copepode: Lernaeocera branchialis . As the levels of parasitic infestation increased: a normocytic, normochromic anaemia when fish had one adult female parasite present, a microcytic anaemia when between 2 and 4 adult females were found and a macrocytic anaemia when at least 5 adult females were present. There was no significant difference in body condition or the coefficient of spleen to body weight between the control sample and samples of individuals infested by Lernaeocera branchialis.
