Regarding the number of vertebrae, the anchovies of the North West belong to the 'West Mediterranean' group and those of the North East and South East to the 'East Mediterranean' group, according to Fage's classification. The anchovies found in Lake Ishkeul are well individualised morphologically and biologically speaking and could be classified in the large group of the anchovies living in Mediterranean brackish waters; the number of their vertebrae is slightly inferior to that of the groups living in the neighbouring sea waters.
