This study on pole trawling was done with the goal of giving some clarification about a theoretically prohibited fishing technique that is little used in France. However, fishermen from some countries routinely practice pole trawling authorised at the European level, which poses a few problems from the point of view of French regulations, and it is on an exempt basis that this technique is used by some boats in Brittany and Normandy, but the only large fleet that is practising pole trawling intensively by using boat booms is based in Dunkerque's harbour. It is the reason for which we studied the Dunkerque fleet's activity and operation; the technical aspect of the trawl was described at length. The contentious situation brought on by the practise of this type of fishing was analysed, as well as its regulation. The affect of the pole trawl on the sea bottom was also addressed. Carrying out this study led me to go on board a few of Dunkerque's various pole trawls, among which a new, very modern boat, "The Johnathan", also described in the report. Making the connection among all the elements that were studied will thus allow us to evaluate the situation and have a more global view of the "pole trawling phenomenon" in France.
