Le premier travail sur ce sujet a été fait par LEDERER qui a trouvé dans les gonades de Pecten maximus comme seul pigment important une xanthophylle à trois atomes d'oxygène (C40H54O3±H2) présentant des maxima d'absorption à 457 et 487 xx dans l'éther de pétrole et dénommée par lui «pectenoxanthine». D'autres pigments, dont les quantités relatives varient selon la saison, accompagnent la « pectenoxanthine ». Ils ont le même spectre d'absorption que celle-ci. LEDERER a pu séparer jusqu'à six zones différentes par chromatographie. Plus récemment, FISHER et coll. ont étudié la teneur en vitamine A et en caroténoïdes du même Pecten maximus (LINNAEUS). Ils ont trouvé surtout des xanthophylles et une trace de ~-carotène, mais pas d'astaxanthine. Enfin, GOODWIN remarque que chez les Lamellibranches on trouve des xanthophylles et des caroténoïdes à réaction acide mais pas d'astaxanthine.
