Les Etats-Unis, grande puissance maritime et pays doté de côtes étendues et riches en ressources vivantes et minérales, son^ profondément concernés par les bouleversements actuels du droit de la mer. Leur participation la %me Conférence des Nations Unies sur le droit de la mer revêt dès lors un intérêt considérable pour eux et pour la communauté internationale. A l'heure où les difficultés qui les opposent aux pays du Tiers-Monde, spécialement dans la définition du régime de l'exploitation des ressources des fonds marins au-delà de la juridiction nationale, font peser sur la Conférence le risque d'un retrait américain qui pourrait en consacrer l'échec, les études contenues dans cet ouvrage devraient permettre de mieux saisir les motivations des décisions que prendra la Maison Blanche. The recent upsettings of the Law of the sea deeply concern the United States whose maritime power is great and whose extended coasts are which of living and mineral resources. Their participation to the 3rd United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea has therefore a considerable interest for them and for the international community. While difficulties oppose them to Third World countries, especially as far as the definition of the regime of exploitation of seabed resources beyond national jurisdiction is concerned and while the Conference is threatened with the American withdrawal which the American withdrawal which might lead to a failure, the studies contained in this publication should allow for a better understanding of the actions which will be taken by the White House.
