AB Depuis une dizaine d'années, l'emploi de pingers a profondément modifié les méthodes de travail en mer profonde. D'abord utilisés pour localiser, par rapport au fond, des engins descendus à la verticale d'un navire (EDGERTON et COUSTEAU, 1959 ; EDGERTON, COUSTEAU, HEKSEY et BACKUS, 1960, pour des caméras profondes - NALWALK, HERSEY, REITZL et EDGERTON, 1962, pour des dragues à roche) les pingers ont aussi été utilisés avec succPs pour surveiller la descente de chaluts à panneaux (BACKUS, 1966) ou de chaluts à perches (ROWE et MENZIES, 967). Dans toutes ces méthodes, le pinger permet de connaître avec précision le moment du contact avec le fond et le temps pendant lequel la drague ou le chalut a travaillé. En général, l'aide apportée par un pinger augmente considérablement les chances de succès d'une opération abyssale (MENZIES, 1964). [OCR NON CONTRÔLE]
AB During the past ten years, the use of pingers has profoundly modified methods of work on the deep-sea bottom. At first used to localize, in relation to the bottom, instruments dropped vertically from a ship (EDGERTON and COUSTEAU, 1959, EDGERTON, COUSTEAU, HERSEY and BACKUS, 1960, for deep-sea cameras ; NALWALK, HERSEY, REITZL and EDGERTON, 1962, for rocky dredges) pingers have also been used with success to survey the descent of otter trawls (BACKUS 1966) or beam trawls (ROWE and NIENZIES, 1967). In al1 these methods, the pinger essentially gives knowledge of the precise instant of contact with the bottom, and the length of time the dredge or trawl works on it. In general, the assistance of a pinger substantially increases the chance of success in abyssal dredging (see MENZIES, 1964). [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]
