AB Le déferlement est certainement le phénomène le plus spectaculaire lié à la houle pour le promeneur côtier, n'ait-il aucune connaissance des mécanismes en jeu. Pour l'océanographe, c'est un phénomène hydrodynamique non-linéaire, non-stationnaire, qui dépend de la pente du fond et de la nature de la houle au large. Pour l'ingénieur constructeur d'ouvrages, c'est une source de forces destructrices (évaluées en dizaines et parfois en centaines de tonnes par mètre carré d'ouvrage) qu'il faut prévoir et contrôler. AB The breaking of waves is probably the most spectacular phenomenon linked to sea swell for the average coastal walker, even if he does not know anything about the mechanisms involved. For the oceanographer, it is a hydrodynamic non-linear, non-stationary phenomenon, which depends on the bottom slope and on the nature of the offshore swell. For the engineer, it is a source of destructive forces (evaluated in tens, if not hundreds of tonnes per square metre of building) which has to be anticipated and mastered.
