AB Some rickettsian infections have been found in French Atlantic oysters, Crassostrea gigas and Ostrea edulis. The micro-organisms parasite the digestive diverticulum epithelium cells although not creating any damage that could strongly affect the molluscs. If not for its shape, which appears to be longer in the case of the Crassostrea gigas Rickettsia, the characteristics of these two micro-organisms seem pretty close and enabled their inclusion in the Rickettsial order.
