Most of the heterotrophic bacteria were aerobic and mesophilic. Thermophilic bacteria were the least numerous, even in vent water. Among anaerobes, sulphate reducing bacteria were present, of which few were thermophilic. No methane-producing bacteria were detected in these waters after two months of incubation at 30 degree and at 80 degree C. In the samples studied, no ultra-thermophilic bacteria were found.
