Small pelagic fish schools are increasingly observed near the sea surface (0-30 m depth) during the PELGAS survey in the Bay of Biscay in spring. These surface schools are likely under-sampled by R/V Thalassa vertical echosounders,as they are located in the sounders' acoustic blind zone. They are however better observed by the vessel lateral echosounder, which samples the 0-10 m depth layer. In this study, we characterise the dimensions, density and distributions of some surface schools observed during the PELGAS2016 survey, by combining vertical and lateral echosounders data. The implications of the presence of the surface schools in terms of small pelagic fish biomass assessment are discussed.
