The stocks of whiting (Merlangius merlangus), pollack (Pollachius pollachius) and striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus), are considered by ICES as Data Limited Stocks (DLS) for the Bay of Biscay areas, those bordering the Iberian Peninsula as well as the Celtic Sea for red mullet. In the case of insufficient data for an analytical assessment, ICES has recommended, for 2013 and 2014, to precautionarily reduce landings by 20 % compared to the period 2009-2011 for these 3 stocks. In order to improve knowledge to fill the gaps in the status of these stocks, and to extract them from the DLS category, the ROMELIGO project has: i) analyzed available data on both catches and professional fishing activity, Captures per Unit of Effort (CPUE) to identify reference fleets, and on indices from scientific surveys, and ii) collected biological parameters (height/weight, height/age, growth, maturity) necessary to setting up a subsequent stock assessment.
