This text introduces the physical and scientific bases of the observation of the sea by spatial way (satellites and drones of very high altitude). He calls back what is remote sensing, its two main types : passive and active remote sensing and clarify the usable portions of the electromagnetic spectre to characterize the phenomena that affect the surface or shallows of the sea and the ocean. Then this text reviews these various usable portions of the spectre and specifies the various behaviors of the marine and maritime targets. Are so reviewed: a) the domain of the visible and of the near-infrared and the applications regarding bathymetry, characterization of shallow bottoms or the color of the sea; b) the domain of thermal infrared and application regarding mapping the sea surface temperature; c) the domain of the passive microwaves and the application in the characterization of the surface salinity, finally d) the domain of the active microwaves and the applications in the characterization of the sea surface states : swells and waves, presence of ships, pollution … The conclusion focuses on the interest of observation systems of the sea fed by space or very high altitude sensors and opens the prospect of an article according to this one who will be focused on such perspectives in connection with the stakes in surveillance, in monitoring, in management, in protection and in development of the New Caledonian maritime spaces and those in the Southwest Pacific
