The aim of this study was to describe the physical forcings of the environment of the bay of Biscay in which living organims, and particularly fishery resources, are developing. The evolution of the hydrosystem was analysed on the long term and at the seasonal scale, using a deterministic approach based on the identification of trends relative to cyclic events. Data were provided by METEO-France for the sea surface temperature at 4 selected points over the 1971- 1993 period and by the Water Agencies for the daily river flows of the Loire and Gironde over the 1959-1990 period. Analyses allowed to build up models for an average year with temperature and river flows changes and to to make spatial comparisons. No trend in river flows appeared on the long term for the 32 years period. On the contrary, a clear increasing trend in temperature was observed but limited in the south of the bay of Biscay. The seasonal dynamics of temperature and flows are synchronous over the bay of Biscay. More than the cyclic pattern in river flows, which is parallel in both rivers, the highest discharges seemed to be independent between the rivers : when the Loire showed maximum deviation relative to its reference condition, the Gironde did not show a similar deviation.
