However, the importance of specific salinity zones and adjacent shallow marine habitats (subtidal and surf zones) for fish feeding is not well understood, particularly in small macrotidal estuaries. Using the example of the Canche estuary, which is considered a reference for small macrotidal estuaries in France, we investigated the structure and seasonal variability in fish food webs based on stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis. Our results provide a new vision of the Canche estuary, which has been considered a major feeding ground for all marine fish that spend time there. Based on C results, our results revealed that organic matter of terrestrial origin has little influence on functioning of the Canche food web, except for flounders in the upstream area of the estuary. Conversely, microphytobenthos and marine particulate organic matter contribute most to the food web of fish in the estuary. Our study also revealed that some fish species visit the estuary for reasons other than feeding, such as to avoid predation or because they are carried by the tide. This work confirmed the suitability of using stable isotopes to trace fish fidelity to feeding grounds less than 10 km apart.
