This is the final report of the eighth session of the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) of the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission, held in Merida, Mexico, on 3–4 November 2017.
The Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) hosted the session at the venue of its seventieth annual conference.
The FAO Secretariat to the session, consisting of Mr. Raymon van Anrooy, Mr Marc Taconet and Mr Roy Bealey, would like to thank the staff of the host institution, particularly Mr Bob Glazer, Mr Alejandro Acosta and Ms W Fadilah Ali, the SAG members, experts, observers from partner organizations and others attending and supporting the organization of this session for their active contributions to the success of the session. The reports from various partner agencies/programmes on their activities in the region are presented in Appendix C; these reports appear as provided to the FAO Secretariat and are made available only in the language of presentation.

The eighth session of the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) of the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC) was held in Merida, Mexico, on 3–4 November 2017. The Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) hosted the session at the venue of its seventieth annual conference. The SAG discussed the outcomes of the work carried out by various joint working groups in 2016–2017 and their Recommendations to WECAFC 17. The SAG reviewed the status of the main fish stocks in Area 31 and discussed the impact of the increase in Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) fisheries on the current stock assessment methods used. The SAG further got updated on the functioning of the Interim Coordination Mechanism for Sustainable Fisheries, the WECAFC-FIRMS partnership and the activities of partner agencies in the region. A list of specific SAG Recommendations for the attention of WECAFC 17 is included in the preface of the report.

La octava sesión del Grupo Asesor Científico, (GAC) de la Comisión de Pesca para el Atlántico Centro Occidental (COPACO) se realizó en Mérida, México, del 3–4 de noviembre 2017. El Instituto de Pesca del Golfo y del Caribe (GCFI) fue el anfitrión de la sesión en ocasión de su septuagésima conferencia anual. EL GAC discutió los resultados del trabajo realizado por varios grupos de trabajo conjunto en 2016-2017 y sus recomendaciones a la COPACO 17. El GAC reviso el estado de las principales poblaciones de peces en el Área 31 y discutió el impacto del aumento de la pesca con Dispositivos de Agregación de Peces (DAPs) en los métodos actuales de evaluación de poblaciones utilizados. Además, el GAC se actualizo en el funcionamiento del Mecanismo de Coordinación Provisional para la Pesca Sostenible, la alianza COPACO-FIRMS y las actividades de las agencias aliadas en la región, Una lista especifica de Recomendaciones del GAC para atención de la COPACO 17 está incluida en el prefacio de este informe.
