The goal of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) is to achieve and maintain a good ecological status of water bodies. In this context, eelgrass beds are monitored every year along the French coast of the English Channel as well as the Atlantic coast to calculate the “Angiosperm” indicator. This indicator is calculated using three metrics, including abundance, which for Zostera noltei corresponds to the percentage of leaf cover in a 50x50cm quadrat. The variability of the results for the “abundance” metric has been highlighted during inter-laboratory tests conducted in 2016 and 2021.
To overcome this variability both in the visual assessment and in the assessment by image processing with ImageJ, it was agreed to make an aid sheet for operators to help assess the eelgrass cover. A catalog of Zostera noltei covers for the meadows monitored within the framework of the WFD was also made. The user’s guide for the image processing software was completed in order to specify different options for the use of this software in this context. These documents are provided in support to the station monitoring protocol of eelgrass beds for the WFD. They can be used during the next monitoring campaign in September 2022.
