La constitution d'un référentiel taxinomique unique à I'IFREMER s'impose comme un horizon incontournable pour une harmonisation et une continuité dans la gestion des données biologiques récoltées par l’Institut. Elle a pour premier corollaire l'uniformisation des dénominations couplée à l'adoption d'une nomenclature taxinomique et systématique actualisée, conforme aux listes d'autorité validées au niveau mondial. La nécessité de disposer d'un référentiel opérationnel relativement stable tout en étant potentiellement ouvert sur l'évolution de la nomenclature taxinomique et systématique constitue la contrainte majeure qui a présidé aux options structurelles. La constitution du référentiel SIH constitue une première étape de l'élaboration du référentiel IFREMER.

The adoption of a single reference data base for IFREMER cannot be missed within the framework of continuous monitoring of biological data. This entails standardization of taxa names connected with an up-to-date taxonomic nomenclature, consistent with international valid lists. The necessity of relative stability of IFREMER's taxonomic data base simultaneously opened on nomenclature's evolution imposes the major constraints for structural choices. The SIH taxonomic reference database is the first step toward the future complete reference data base for IFREMER.
