Du 22 septembre au 19 décembre 1955, cinq organismes d'étude ont travaillé conjointe afin d'améliorer la connaissance des eaux pacifiques, centraIes et orientales. Le navire « Hugh M, Smith », du « Pacific Oceanic Fishery Investigation », a obtenu des renseignements d'ordre physique, chimique et biologique sur la zone parcourue par le courant équatorial entre les longitudes 158° O et 105° O, Une unité de la flotte péruvienne a recueilli des informations sur la limite Nord, voisine de l'Equateur, du courant de Humbolt. Deux vaisseaux de la «Scripps Institution of Oceanography» (Université de Californie), le « Spencer F. Baird» et l' « Horizon », ont concentré leurs efforts dans la région comprise entre le méridien 125° O et le continent américain. From September 22nd to December 19th, 1955, five research agencies collaborated in the study of Pacific, Central and Eastern waters.
