| Résumé en anglais | The evolution of the Western Mediterranean basin during Tertiary time is discussed. It is proposed that it was created by a continental drift process during Middle Oligocene time, synchronously with the creation of the grabens over the continents. The significance of the Messinian evaporitic sedimentary episode is discussed in liaison with the problem of large scale subsidence which has been at least six kilometers since Oligocene time.
