Nutrient sources and primary production in the Eastern Mediterranean
The nitrogen budget of the Mediterranean Sea and particularly the eastern basin is constructed from estimates of carbon-based primary production measurements coupled with a model of new production tailored to the circulation pattern of the Mediterranean. New production values provide estimates of the new nitrogen demand for the regions considered and these values are examined with reference to estimates of terrestrial nitrogen inputs to suggest that about 40% of present Mediterranean potential fish yield arises from the latter source.
