Les campagnes CIPREA ont eu pour but d'étudier l'upwelling équatorial dans le golfe de Guinée d'un double point de vue : celui des mécanismes physiques du refroidissement et de 1'enrichissement en sels nutritifs des couches de surface d'une part, celui de la production planctonique d'autre part. A chacun de ces objectifs correspondaient des moyens d'étude dif­férents : des mouillages profonds instrumentés avec des chaînes à thermistances et des cou- rantomètres pour le premier, des campagnes océanographiques pour le second. Les résultats présentés ici sont ceux de la saison d'upwelling 1978 pendant laquelle trois mouillages fu­rent installés dans ,1a zone équatoriale à 4°W du 5 juin au 31 août et A navires effectuèrent des mesures physico chimiques et de production dans l'ensemble du golfe de Guinée : le SUROIT, le NOROIT, le CAPRICORNE et le NIZERY.

The aim of the CIPREA cruises (1978-1980) was the study of the equatorial upwelling in the Gulf of,Guinea. The objectives of the program were both, physical and biological. The physical objective consisted in a description of the processes of the equatorial sea surface cooling and nutrient enrichment in summer. The biological objective was the assessment of the planktonic production in the equatorial upwelling. Each of these objectives required different means : deep moorings equipped with current meters and thermistance chains for the first one, transects and long-duration stations for the second one. The results presented in this issue are those of the CIPREA cruises performed in summer 1978 during the upwelling season. Three moorings were deployed from June 5th to August 31 st along 4°W at 0°30N, 0° and 0°30S. Four vessels performed physical, chemical and biologi­cal measurements in the whole Gulf of Guinea from August 2nd to September 13th : R/V CAPRICORNE NIZERY, NOROIT and SUROIT.
