L'objectif principal du colloque franco-soviétique, 1979,était tenu en janvier de dresser un état des connaissances sur la production primaire et se- condaire et les interactions phytoplancton —zooplancton. En ce qui concerne l'éche- lon primaire, 1 accent a été mis, non sur les méthodes de mesure de la production, mais sur les facteurs de celle-ci et principalement sur les systèmes de production- régénération. Par contre, pour le zooplancton, les communications ont porté essen- tiellement sur les méthodes d'évaluation de la production considérée comme apparte- nant à l'échelon secondaire. En fait, les exposés et les discussions sur les interactions phyto- plancton-zooplancton ont fait ressortir deux voies de recherche encore insuffisamment explorées : - le rôle trophique du matériel organique non-vivant (agrégats, foeces, diatomées brisées, etc) vis-à-vis des consommateurs microphages a été souvent très sous-estimé ; - la composition spécifique du phytoplancton et du zooplancton et les cas de dérive trophique" du second, sont trop souvent négligés. Ces lacunes nuisent aux tentatives de modélisation. Pour des raisons d analogies dimensionnelles et de cycle biologique avec le plancton, une demi-journée du symposium a été consacrée au système psam- mique (micro- et meiobenthos). Les exposés et la discussion ont fait ressortir que les connaissances sur la structure trophique interne de ce système et sur ses rapports avec le système macrobenthique sont très insuffisantes.

 

The aim of the french-russian symposium held in Marseilles in January 1979 was to draw up a statement of the present knowledge on the primary and secondary productions in the pélagial and the phytoplankton-zooplankton relationships. With regard to the first step of the trophic pyramid the contributions and the subsequent discussions have been especially devoted to the production-recycling systems, whereas those related to zooplankton mainly dealt with the methods for a better evaluation of the production. With regard to the phytoplankton-zooplankton relationships the participants recognized that two fields presently appear insufficiently investigated. (i) The part the non-living organic material (e.g. detritus, foecal pellets, broken diatoms, etc...) plays for the  consumers at the second step of the trophic pyramid has been often under-estimated. (ii) The specific composition of the phytoplankton and zooplankton populations has been often disregarded, especially as regards the influence it exerts on changes in both the diversity of the food resources and the trophic behaviour of some consumers, e.g. those which are able to be indifferently filter-feeders (on non-living particles and small algae) and predators (on largesized diatoms, protozoans and small metazoans). Both these gaps make uneasy the attemps for modelling. To some extent, the vegetal and animal organisms pertaining to the psammic system exhibit some biological similarities to the plankters (e.g. they are small-sized and have a short life-cycle). Therefore, half a day of the symposium has been devoted to this benthic system. A special attention has been paid to the primary production of this system which is often higher than that of the planktonic algae at shallow depths. The trophic structure of the psammic system appears insufficiently investigated as well as its energy output to macrobenthos consumers.
