Abstract

How to understand health in marine molluscs? A living being can be functionally described by monitoring biomarkers under laboratory conditions. In humans and many animals, "normal" values for biomarkers have been proposed; these were determined by carrying out measurements or observations on samples of populations deemed to be in good health, the rigorous selection of these populations and samples constituting a major issue. This approach has long been based on the idea that a living being is healthy when it is within the norm, that its biomarker values fall within the distribution of biomarker values obtained in a healthy population. Various stages have led to changes in the terminology of normal or usual values in favor of those of reference values and intervals. The definitions of these terms and their determination have been the subject of publications and international standards which constitute the scientific corpus of the theory of reference values. After having chosen biomarkers of interest in the biological health of the cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas, then constituting populations of supposedly healthy cupped oysters, is it possible to apply this theory and determine reference intervals for these biomarkers in a reference sample group of cupped oysters?
