Guy Jacques, directeur de recherches honoraire au CNRS, raconte la quarantaine d’années passées au sein de cet organisme, sans oublier une vingtaine d’années de retraité très actif comme vulgarisateur. Bourré d’anecdotes amusantes, ce récit débute par une entrée dans cet organisme sans thèse et sans la moindre publication, à faire pâlir d’envie les candidats d’aujourd’hui ! Heureux temps où l’océanographie était une priorité nationale. En dehors de sa propre recherche sur le phytoplancton où il a notamment lancé un programme d’études sur l’océan Antarctique, le narrateur détaille son activité dans les différents postes à responsabilité qu’il a occupés au CNRS, à l’Ifremer et, surtout à l’Orstom où il a été directeur de l’information scientifique. Et ce n’est évidemment pas un hasard si l’auteur a choisi comme sous-titre à « Quarante ans de recherche au CNRS : une vie de rêve… »

Guy Jacques honorary research director at the CNRS tells of the forty or so years spent in this agency as well as the twenty plus years of very active retired life spent as a scientific popularizer. Full of often entertaining stories, this book starts with the acceptance at the CNRS without thesis or publication that today’s candidates would envy! These were the times when oceanography was a national priority. Besides his own research on phytoplankton (he started a program of study of the Antarctic ocean), Jacques talks about his various postings: CNRS, Ifremer and Orstom where he was director of scientific information. It is obviously not by chance that the author chose as subtitle to this book the sentence: “the best of lives!”
