The vastness of the Brazilian territorial sea, associated with the fact that Brazil is considered a megadiverse country, sharply contrasts with the low level of national knowledge regarding the deep sea. The deep sea involves extensive environment, but fragile and increasingly threatened by relatively recent explorations, such as deep-sea mining, which puts at risk many marine environments and species. In order to diminish this gap of information, the present study aims to identify material from a largely unexplored collection of polychaetes, from the Terres Australes et Antarctique Françaises (TAAF) expedition, with the MD55 cruise aboard the R/V Marion Dufresne. Held in 1987, the cruise sampled stations off the states of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and Bahia, including canyons, abyssal plains and the Trindade and Martin Vaz Archipelago, environments at depths rarely, if ever, studied in Brazil. With the material investigated, 3,319 polychaete annelids were identified at the family level, with 39 families found from 15 m to 3,450 m. Specimens of the family Nereididae were identified at the species level, with the study of the 250 individuals, as it is the family with the largest number of lots among the families with the largest number of specimens. Such analysis resulted in the recognition of 7 species: Alitta succinea, Ceratonereis excisa, Composetia hircinicola, Composetia vittata, Neanthes sp., Nereis riisei and Platynereis aff. magalhaensis. This study contributes to the expansion of the Brazilian knowledge about the geographical and bathymetric distribution of most of the families and of the Nereididae species found.

A vastidão do mar territorial brasileiro, associada ao fato de o Brasil ser considerado um país megadiverso, contrastam de forma aguda com o baixo nível de conhecimento nacional sobre o mar profundo. O mar profundo envolve ambientes extensos, porém frágeis e cada vez mais ameaçados pelas relativamente recentes explorações, como, por exemplo, a mineração em águas profundas, o que coloca em risco muitos ambientes e espécies marinhas. A fim de diminuir as lacunas de informação sobre a fauna de profundidade, o presente estudo tem por objetivo identificar material de uma coleção amplamente inexplorada de anelídeos poliquetas, proveniente da expedição Terres Australes et Antarctique Françaises (TAAF), com o cruzeiro MD55 a bordo do N/Oc. Marion Dufresne. Realizado em 1987, o cruzeiro amostrou estações nos estados do Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo e Bahia, incluindo cânions, planícies abissais e o arquipélago de Trindade e Martin Vaz, ambientes em profundidade raramente, ou nunca, estudados no Brasil. Com a análise desse material, foram identificados 3.319 anelídeos poliquetas em nível de família, resultando no reconhecimento de 39 famílias, encontrados em profundidades desde 15 até 3.450 m. Espécimes da família Nereididae foram identificados em nível específico, com o estudo dos 250 indivíduos da família encontrados, por ser a família com maior número de lotes dentre as famílias com maior número de espécimes. Tal análise resultou no reconhecimento de 7 espécies: Alitta succinea, Ceratonereis excisa, Composetia hircinicola, Composetia vittata, Neanthes sp., Nereis riisei e Platynereis aff. magalhaensis. O presente estudo contribui com a ampliação do conhecimento brasileiro sobre a distribuição geográfica e batimétrica da maioria das famílias e de espécies de Nereididae encontradas.
